How Gastroenterology Associates is Helping the Next Generation of Healthcare Providers Thrive
At Gastroenterology Associates, supporting our team members is more than a goal, it’s a promise. For Grace and Maggie, two dedicated employees with bright futures in healthcare, that promise made all the difference.
Grace, an Upstate native and Clemson University graduate (December 2022), joined Gastro in early 2023 after discovering her true passion wasn’t veterinary medicine as she once believed, but rather human healthcare. “After working with animals of all shapes and sizes during internships, I realized I wanted to work with people,” she shared. That realization led her to Gastroenterology Associates, where she began her journey as a scribe.
Maggie, a Winston-Salem, NC native, also attended Clemson University and began working at Gastro during her junior year, already focused on her goal of becoming a Physician Assistant. After graduating in May 2024, she spent her gap year working fulltime at Gastro gaining hands-on experience and completing her patient care hours. “Being in the room as a scribe, you hear exactly how providers talk with patients — it’s been incredibly helpful,” she said.
Both Grace and Maggie started out as scribes, shadowing providers and learning the ins and outs of patient care. From there, they advanced to floater roles, gaining experience across different parts of the practice, and eventually began training as primaries for specific doctors. Throughout every step, Gastroenterology Associates supported their growth — encouraging them, mentoring them, and helping them build a strong clinical foundation.
“GI was the best field for me to start working in because you get to learn so much about other systems too,” Grace said. “So much comes back to the GI tract. It’s given me a really good foundation, especially since GI is usually one of the hardest units in PA school. That foundation is going to be really, really helpful.”
Now, both women are preparing to take the next step toward their dreams. Grace will be attending Wingate University’s Physician Assistant Program, while Maggie is set to begin at South College in Knoxville, Tennessee. They’ll both be working at Gastro through the summer before heading off to school, equipped with knowledge, experience and the confidence gained through their time at the practice.
Gastroenterology Associates is proud to have played a role in their journeys and remains committed to fostering the growth of future healthcare providers. Grace and Maggie are living proof that when passion meets opportunity, remarkable things can happen.
