Gastroenterology Associates Welcomes New Physician

Gastroenterology Associates is excited to announce the addition of Dr. Alex Kovalic to the gastroenterology team. Dr. Kovalic begins seeing patients on September 16, 2024, rotating through the Downtown Greenville, Halton Rd, and Spartanburg locations of Gastroenterology Associates.

Originally from Memphis, TN, Dr. Kovalic always knew he wanted to pursue a career in medicine, where he was quickly drawn to the field of GI through his interest in the wide breadth of diseases the specialty is able to treat.  Through his time at Wake Forest Internal Medicine Residency, Internal Medicine Hospitalist in the height of the pandemic, and Gastroenterology & Hepatology Fellowship in Queens, NY, Dr. Kovalic brings a host of GI experience to the Upstate. He values the comprehensive aspect of GI and the reward of seeing patients in clinic, managing medical aspects of their care, and also performing therapeutic procedures to improve the patient’ s condition from the endoscopy room.

Dr. Kovalic’s wife, Olivia, is also a physician in internal medicine.  They knew very early on in their medical journey that the Upstate was a place they both wanted to settle and practice medicine. They visited family in Greenville in 2018 and were immediately drawn to the area. Then, when Dr. Kovalic met with Gastro Associates and observed the way the group puts patient care first, it became an easy decision to make the move.

“Their patient care is above and beyond. The way the practice is set up is exactly how I would do it if I started out on my own…they have just been doing it for decades,” said Kovalic. “I’m thrilled to be here, excited to take care of patients here in the Upstate and lay down with roots with my family for decades to come!”

Outside of work, Dr. Kovalic enjoys spending time with his wife and their two children. He also enjoys being outside and exploring the parks and trails in SC and Western NC.
